The student-led SAFE chapter at Texas A&M is proud to have sponsored a gun safety in medical education resolution that the Texas Medical Association (TMA) student section proposed at the TexMed26 (annual meeting of the TMA). The TMA vote to adopt the student-driven resolution!

Congratulations to medical students Uma Reddy, Emilia Coffey, Emma Russell, Michael Shearer, Jerry Liu, Sunitha Konatham, and Soneet Kapadia from Texas A&M Naresh K Vashisht College of Medicine and UT Health Sciences Center San Antonio.

SAFE hopes to soon share with all chapters the steps Texas A&M SAFE Chapter took to accomplish this, to inspire other chapters around the country.

The 2026 National Research Conference for the Prevention of Firearm Related Harms on December 9-11, 2026 in Baltimore, Maryland, is a wonderful opportunity for medical students and faculty to attend, potentially present and share a connection with a community committed to this work.

While SAFE is making great progress in our project to examine if and how firearm injury prevention and care education is incorporated into U.S. medical school curricula, there are 190 medical schools out there who we’ve yet to reach.

By working together, we can develop an effective and culturally responsive curriculum that will equip future physicians to address the multifaceted but addressable issue of firearm injury and death.

If you are from one of the 18 institutions that have already completed the survey please do not fill out the survey.

The 10 question survey will take approximately 3 minutes.
