As we head into June, Gun Violence Prevention Month, we are eager to officially share the new SAFE Media Communications Guide to help healthcare providers feel more confident and prepared when engaging with media and speaking at events related to gun violence prevention or firearm injury prevention.
This guide was created to support members in communicating clearly, effectively, and professionally about firearm injury prevention across a variety of platforms, including television, radio, print, and digital media. It includes practical tips on preparing key messages, navigating interviews, staying on message, and avoiding common communication pitfalls.
With increased attention on firearm injury prevention during June, many SAFE chapters and healthcare provider advocates may have opportunities to participate in events, educational programming, awareness campaigns, or media outreach.
Remember to approach the subject of firearm injury prevention with a:
Apolitical, culturally humble approach
Education focus and how critical it is that physicians learn how to approach this topic in medical school
Focus on harm reduction language and not anti-2A language
June is an important time to elevate evidence-based conversations around firearm injury prevention. Using consistent messaging across chapters strengthens SAFE’s collective voice and helps us advocate more effectively for our communities.
Thank you for your continued advocacy and leadership.
